Volunteers participating in community based projects will be placed with a host family within the community in which they will be working. In addition to receiving food and accommodation, this is also an excellent opportunity for volunteers to immerse themselves in the Nepali community, within a supportive environment, learning about Nepali lifestyle, culture and language and sharing their culture in return.
Under Community Teaching Projects, FOCUSED has a number of volunteering opportunities within the rural community, which includes:
- Women’s Empowerment Projects such as women’s education; income generation; and credits; and health, sanitation and the environment.
- Child Care Initiatives such as children’s clubs; early childhood development; schooling for conflict victims and orphanage support.
- Youth Development Schemes such as a community youth club to develop life skills and English language classes.
- Teacher Training and Education, including workshops, seminars and exchange visits.
These education projects are conducted at a very basic level, introducing the villagers to concepts and creative activities of Environmental Awareness and personal hygiene. Volunteers may also provide assistance to youth clubs or women’s groups in the community sharing their ideas, skills and knowledge about environmental issues. Example projects include: creating “green” clubs, planting a flower garden, planting trees, garbage management, recycling programs, making a smokeless stove, building a toilet pit, etc.
